National Marrow Awareness Month

Connected by Courage: Honoring National Marrow Awareness Month with Hope and Action

This National Marrow Awareness Month, we celebrate the incredible strength of patients, families, and donors whose lives are intertwined by one of the most selfless gifts imaginable — the gift of life. A bone marrow or stem cell transplant can mean survival for someone battling leukemia, lymphoma, or another life-threatening blood disorder. This month is a time to raise awareness, honor those who give, and inspire others to join the fight. Every person has the power to make a lifesaving difference.

Understanding Marrow Donation

Bone marrow is the soft tissue inside our bones that produces blood cells vital for health and immunity. For many patients with blood cancers or genetic disorders, a marrow or stem cell transplant is their best — and sometimes only — chance for recovery. But finding a match is difficult. Because tissue types must be closely matched, many patients depend on the kindness of strangers through national and international donor registries. Awareness helps bridge that gap, connecting hope with healing.

The Gift That Saves Lives

Marrow donors are real-life heroes. Their choice to join the registry or follow through with a donation can completely change another person’s future. Most stem cell donations today are made through a simple process similar to donating blood. It’s safe, relatively quick, and profoundly meaningful. One match can save one life — and one life can inspire countless others. During National Marrow Awareness Month, we celebrate those who step forward to give and those who hold on to hope while waiting for their match.

Breaking Barriers Through Awareness

Many people don’t know how easy it can be to help. Myths about pain, safety, or eligibility often keep potential donors from registering. This month is about breaking those barriers. Education turns fear into understanding and hesitation into action. Anyone in good health, typically between the ages of 18 and 40, can join the registry. Awareness is the bridge between uncertainty and courage — and that bridge saves lives.

Standing with Patients and Families

Behind every transplant is a story — a story of waiting, of courage, of love. Families face emotional and financial challenges while holding onto hope. Communities can make a difference by donating, volunteering, and sharing information. This National Marrow Awareness Month, we stand with every family waiting for a match, every patient fighting for time, and every donor who said yes when it mattered most. Together, we bring light to the darkest moments.

A Global Movement of Compassion

The marrow donor community stretches across the world. Organizations like Be The Match and other registries unite people from every background to help save lives. Each new donor increases the chances that someone, somewhere, will find their perfect match. When we join together in compassion, we build a global network of hope.

A Call to Action and Hope

This National Marrow Awareness Month, take one powerful step — register as a donor. Share the message. Encourage others to do the same. Each action builds a stronger, more connected community of care.

You could be the match someone has been waiting for — the reason another family gets more birthdays, more laughter, more life. Together, through awareness and action, we can transform hope into healing and make every November a celebration of courage, compassion, and connection.
