National Runaway Prevention Month

Together for Safety and Hope: Honoring National Runaway Prevention Month with Awareness and Action

This National Runaway Prevention Month, we come together as a community to support, protect, and empower youth who are at risk of running away or experiencing homelessness. Every young person deserves safety, love, and a place to belong. Yet thousands of children and teens face uncertainty every day. This month, we shine a light on their stories, raise awareness of the challenges they face, and work together to create a future where every young person feels seen, heard, and safe.

Understanding the Crisis

Youth run away for many reasons — family conflict, abuse, neglect, discrimination, or simply feeling unseen or unheard. For some, it’s about escaping danger; for others, it’s about seeking independence. Whatever the reason, no young person should face those struggles alone. Runaway and homeless youth are among the most vulnerable in our society, often facing hunger, exploitation, and trauma. By understanding the “why,” we can respond with compassion instead of judgment and provide meaningful support that changes lives.

Listening Without Judgment

Sometimes, all it takes is someone who listens. For youth in crisis, being heard can make the difference between hope and despair. Listening with empathy, without judgment or blame, builds trust. It opens the door to connection and safety. This National Runaway Prevention Month, let’s make an effort to truly listen — to the fears, struggles, and dreams of young people in our communities. When they know someone cares, they are more likely to reach out for help.

Resources That Save Lives

Organizations and hotlines across the country work every day to protect runaway and homeless youth. The National Runaway Safeline (1-800-RUNAWAY) offers 24/7, confidential help to young people and families. These services provide safety plans, crisis intervention, and connections to local resources. Access to support can be life-changing. Awareness helps young people know that help exists, and it reminds families and communities that they can play a part in prevention.

Building Stronger Families and Communities

Prevention starts at home and grows through community. Open communication, trust, and understanding build stronger family connections. Schools, mentors, and community organizations can also be lifelines — helping young people find stability and belonging. When we work together, we create networks of care that reach every corner of our neighborhoods. This National Runaway Prevention Month, we are reminded that no one should have to go through hard times alone. Compassion and connection save lives.

A Call to Awareness and Action

This National Runaway Prevention Month, let’s go beyond awareness — let’s act. Share information about available resources. Support local shelters and youth programs. Start conversations in schools, workplaces, and communities about what young people truly need. Every action, no matter how small, brings us closer to ending youth homelessness and giving hope to those who feel lost.

Every young person deserves a chance to dream, to grow, and to feel safe. Together, we can make that possible. This month and every month, let’s stand united for our youth — because prevention begins with compassion, and healing begins with hope.
