Rett Syndrome Awareness Month

October 1, 2025 October 31, 2025 CDT

Rett Syndrome Awareness Month, observed in October, is a time to increase awareness of Rett Syndrome, promote the need for a cure, and spur advocacy on behalf of those suffering with the emotional, financial and physical burden of Rett Syndrome.

Rett Syndrome is a serious lifelong neurological disorder that is caused by random mutations in a gene called MECP2. Diagnosed almost exclusively in girls, symptoms typically appear in toddlerhood. Although very rare, boys can also have Rett Syndrome. There are several specific genetic scenarios that can happen. Many children with Rett are unable to speak, walk or use their hands. Breathing problems, feeding tubes, seizures, anxiety, gastrointestinal and orthopedic issues are common.

Rett Syndrome Awareness Month educates the public that, despite the debilitating nature of this disorder, these girls are so much more than a laundry list of symptoms. Their strength inspires and motivates others.
