Idea to Advocacy: The Personalized Cause Story

Lupus and a Personalized Cause

Our Beginning: A Lupus Awareness Journey

Our story begins with lupus awareness. Both my daughter and I live with lupus, an unpredictable autoimmune disease. In the early days, the road was filled with uncertainty. There were few treatment options, limited understanding, and symptoms that seemed to come and go without reason. Diagnosing lupus was a long, frustrating journey. On average, receiving a lupus diagnosis takes nearly six years. More than half of patients are misdiagnosed along the way. For us, that meant years of searching for answers while managing the toll lupus takes on daily life.

Finding a Symbol of Hope

As we learned to advocate for ourselves, I searched for a symbol of hope for lupus awareness. I wanted something recognizable, like the pink ribbon for breast cancer. What I found was a fractured community, split between colors and organizations. Still, I held onto what I could. I wore and shared my “Get into The Loop” pin created by the Dorough Foundation. Even small symbols spark conversations, create visibility, and remind us our voices matter.

Beyond Our Story

Over time, I realized our story was just one among countless others. The truth is, behind every cause—whether it’s medical, mental health, animal welfare, or social justice—are unseen faces carrying untold stories. Too often, these voices are unheard.

A Place for Every Advocate

That’s why we created this site. What began as a platform centered on lupus has evolved into a space for advocates of all causes. Here, people can come together to raise awareness for the issues closest to their hearts. Through meaningful symbols—pins, ribbons, and wristbands, both personalized and non-personalized—we help bring visibility to the causes that matter most.

Stronger Together Through Awareness

Advocacy is about more than raising awareness—it’s about building connection and community. When we share these symbols, we remind one another that no one has to face their journey alone. These small acts of visibility can create understanding, support, and hope. That is true for lupus awareness and any cause close to your heart..

Awareness Inspires Understanding and Change

Awareness and education go hand in hand. When we educate people about important causes, we raise awareness—and that awareness opens the door for even deeper understanding. It’s a powerful cycle, one that can inspire compassion and lead to lasting change.

Every effort matters. By sharing the information on this site with friends, family, co-workers, and communities, you become part of that cycle. You help bring unseen struggles into the light and support those who need it most. You also remind others that they are not alone.

Together, we can spark hope, spread compassion, and create meaningful change. This is true for lupus, mental health, animal welfare, social justice, and every cause that needs a voice.

Our Engravable Ribbon

Humanizing the Cause

Awareness ribbons are powerful symbols. However, they do not always capture the human stories behind the causes they represent. While meaningful, awareness ribbons can sometimes feel impersonal. They are recognized by color, yet disconnected from people living the experience every day. I realized advocacy needed something more personal. It needed to reflect the real people behind each cause and their journeys.

That realization inspired the creation of Personalized Cause® and the first individually engravable awareness ribbon. For the first time, people could add a name, date, or personal message directly onto a ribbon. This transformed it into a personal expression of advocacy, remembrance, and support.

The First Engraved Awareness Pin: “My Daughter and Me”

The very first Personalized Cause ribbon was engraved with the words “My Daughter and Me.” Those four words said everything. They sparked conversations and invited understanding. They also allowed me to advocate without explaining our story aloud. The engraving itself became our voice.

Even our logo reflects the heart behind this mission. My daughter designed it while she was still a teenager. At the time, she was learning to navigate her own journey with lupus. Her creativity, strength, and resilience helped shape our logo. They also shaped the spirit of Personalized Cause itself.

A Catalyst for Change

Almost immediately, people began asking questions about lupus. Those conversations opened doors that once felt closed. By wearing my ribbon, I saw people pause to listen and learn. They began to better understand life with chronic illness. It reminded me that awareness creates connection. Connection often leads to compassion. Compassion can inspire support and encourage advocacy. It can also help drive the search for better treatments and a cure. To me, that is the true meaning of advocacy. It is sharing your story to bring understanding to an important cause.

What surprised me most was how much the experience changed me. For years, lupus made me feel powerless. I could not control my illness. I also could not control what my daughter was facing. But when I started wearing my purple personalized ribbon, something changed. Instead of feeling defined by lupus, I felt empowered to speak openly. What once felt isolating became a source of strength and resilience. That ribbon became more than awareness. It became a reflection of courage, hope, and determination.

Pins Can Change the World

One small awareness pin can create meaningful change for both individuals and the communities around them. In the beginning, I wore mine to represent my own cause. Over time, I realized it could serve a greater purpose. I wanted it to encourage others facing health challenges or difficult social issues. And, I wanted people to understand their voices mattered and to know they could advocate for themselves and others.

I have always believed that putting a face to illness brings humanity to a cause. It transforms awareness into connection. It reminds people that every ribbon represents a real person and a real story. Behind each cause is a family and a life deeply affected. When people see that human connection, compassion grows. Compassion often leads to action and support. It can also inspire others to stand beside a cause and make a difference.
