From Idea to Impact: The Personalized Cause® Story
- Who We Are
A Story of Resilience, Hope, and a Personalized Cause
Our story began with lupus. Both my daughter and I live with this unpredictable autoimmune disease, and in the early days, the road was filled with uncertainty. There were few treatment options, limited understanding, and symptoms that seemed to come and go without reason. Diagnosing lupus was a long, frustrating journey. On average, it takes nearly six years to receive a diagnosis, and more than half of patients are misdiagnosed along the way. For us, that meant years of searching for answers while managing the toll lupus takes on daily life.
As we learned to advocate for ourselves, I searched for a symbol of hope—something like the pink ribbon for breast cancer—to raise awareness for lupus. What I found was a fractured community, split between colors and organizations. Still, I clung to what I could: I wore and shared the “Get into The Loop” pin, because even small symbols can spark conversations, create visibility, and remind us that our voices matter.
Over time, I realized our story was just one among countless others. Behind every cause—whether it’s medical, mental health, animal welfare, or social justice—are unseen faces carrying untold stories. Too often, those voices are overlooked.
That’s why this site exists. While it began with lupus, it has grown into a space for all advocates. Here, people can unite to raise awareness for the causes closest to their hearts. Through simple symbols—pins, ribbons, and wristbands, both personalized and non-personalized—we shine a light on what matters most.
Because advocacy is more than awareness—it’s connection. And when we share these symbols, we remind each other that no one has to fight alone. This is true for lupus awareness and any other cause you find meaningful.
Awareness Is Education, and Education Raises Awareness!
Awareness and education go hand in hand. When we educate people about important causes, we raise awareness—and that awareness opens the door for even deeper understanding. It’s a powerful cycle, one that can inspire compassion and lead to lasting change.
Every effort matters. By sharing the information on this site with friends, family, co-workers, and communities, you become part of that cycle. You help bring unseen struggles into the light, support those who need it most, and remind others that they are not alone.
Together, we can spark hope, spread compassion, and create meaningful change—for lupus, for mental health, for animal welfare, for social justice, and for every cause that deserves a voice.
From Idea to Impact: Our Engravable Ribbon
Humanizing the Cause
Awareness ribbons alone don’t always humanize the causes they represent. As meaningful as they are, they can sometimes feel generic—symbols without a story. What I came to realize is that advocacy needs a reason, something deeper than just a color or a shape. Behind every awareness ribbon is a person who is struggling, someone who needs support, compassion, and understanding.
That realization is what led me to create Personalized Cause®—and the very first individually engravable awareness ribbon. For the first time, people could inscribe a name, date, or message directly onto their ribbon, making their advocacy personal and visible.
Personalized Cause’s first ribbon was engraved with the words “My Daughter and Me.” That simple phrase spoke louder than anything I could have said. It caught people’s attention. It invited questions. And it gave me a way to advocate even in silence—because my engraving told our story.
Even our logo carries that same personal touch. It was designed by my daughter, who was still in her teens at the time and learning to navigate her own journey with lupus. Her creativity and resilience gave our mission a face, a voice, and a symbol of hope.
Catalyst for Change
Suddenly, people began asking questions—about my health, about my daughter’s journey, and about this disease called lupus. Their curiosity opened the door to conversations that had rarely happened before. By wearing my ribbon, I watched as others took the time to learn, to listen, and to educate themselves. That shift showed me something powerful: when one person raises awareness, it sparks understanding. And with understanding comes compassion. Compassion can ripple outward—shaping how people see a disease, inspiring support, and even fueling the search for a cure. That, to me, is advocacy at its best: using your voice, your story, and even a small symbol to shine light on a cause close to your heart.
What I didn’t expect was how much it would change me. For the first time, I felt empowered in a situation that had so often left me powerless. I couldn’t control my illness, and I couldn’t control my daughter’s. But by wearing that purple custom ribbon, I found a sense of ownership over my disease, instead of feeling owned by it. What once made me feel defeated began to feel like a declaration. My ribbon became a symbol of liberation—a reminder that while lupus could shape my body, it could not silence my voice.
Pins Can Change the World
One small awareness pin holds the power to create change—both personally and within a community. At first, I wore mine to represent my own cause. But as time went on, I realized it could be more than that. I wanted it to spark courage in others who were facing a personal health crisis or struggling with a social issue. I wanted people to see that they, too, could advocate for themselves.
I’ve always believed that it’s essential to put a face to an illness. That’s what gives it humanity, and that’s what fuels the fight for a cure. When people see the person behind the ribbon, they no longer see just a disease—they see a story, a family, a life worth standing beside. That recognition has the power not only to strengthen those of us in the fight, but also to inspire others, even those who may know nothing about a cause, to join in and make a difference.
Honored with Social Health Network WEGO Health Award
Since those early days, our work has been recognized in meaningful ways. The Social Health Network has twice nominated us for a Best in Show: Instagram WEGO Health Award, a reminder that even small symbols can spark big conversations.
That’s why we invite you to join us on social media—Instagram, Facebook, X, Pinterest, and YouTube—where we share stories, resources, and the ongoing work of Personalized Cause®.
At our core, our mission is simple yet powerful: to help make the world a more compassionate and accepting place—one where every voice can be heard. We advocate not only for invisible illnesses like arthritis and lupus, but also for animal welfare, cancer awareness, rare diseases, and social causes that deserve recognition.
We believe awareness grows one step at a time. Sometimes, that step is as small as a pin, a ribbon, or a wristband. But together, those steps can lead to real change.
