Zebra awareness pins are a bold and visually distinct symbol used primarily to raise awareness for rare diseases, particularly Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and other rare diseases and disorders. The zebra’s unique black and white stripes are a perfect metaphor for conditions that often go unrecognized or misdiagnosed. Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes is a group of connective tissue disorders that cause symptoms like joint mobility, skin fragility, easy bruising and chronic pain and fatigue.
The zebra represents patients who don’t fit the “typical” diagnosis, a reference to the medical saying: “When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.” EDS patients are the “zebras,” which are less common, but real. In addition, the zebra print ribbon represents the entire community of rare disease patients. Further, there are over 7,000 recognized rare diseases, many of which are under-diagnosed or misunderstood. Rare Disease Day takes place on February 28, or February 29 during leap years.
