Movember For Prostate Cancer Awareness

Movember Fundraiser: Duke Med Students Support Men’s Health

A couple of medical students at Duke University took initiative and launched a competitive fundraiser to support prostate cancer awareness. One of the students proudly wore our Personalized Cause® light blue awareness pin, engraved with “Movember,” to help raise funds and spark conversations about men’s health.

The light blue ribbon is the official color for men’s health causes, including prostate cancer awareness. It serves as a visible symbol of support and education for issues that affect millions of men every year.

What Is Movember?

Movember—a blend of moustache and November—is a global movement where men grow mustaches and women lend their support to raise awareness for men’s health. From prostate and testicular cancer to mental health and suicide prevention, Movember aims to “change the face of men’s health.”

The campaign is organized by the Movember Foundation, which encourages fundraising efforts around the world. Whether it’s through sporting a mustache, hosting an event, or wearing a light blue awareness pin, every action helps spread the message and fund lifesaving research.

Want to show your support? Wear a light blue Personalized Cause® awareness pin engraved with “Movember” to start conversations and help make men’s health a priority—not just in November, but all year long.

Movember – A Global Charity for Men’s Health

Movember is the world’s only global charity focused exclusively on men’s health. The Movember Foundation raises funds to support innovative research and life-changing programs. Its mission: help men live happier, healthier, and longer lives.

The Foundation runs year-round awareness and fundraising campaigns, with Movember—held each November—being its signature, internationally recognized event. The campaign encourages men to grow mustaches and start conversations about their health in a fun and impactful way.

Movember and Prostate Cancer Awareness

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the United States. It ranks as the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men. The disease disproportionately affects African-American men, who are more likely to be diagnosed and to die from it than white men.

Most prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas, which begin in the gland cells that release fluids. Unfortunately, early-stage prostate cancer typically shows no symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they can include frequent urination or a weak urine flow—though these signs can also result from benign conditions.

Prostate Cancer Screening and Survival

Early detection saves lives. Screening options include:

  • Digital rectal exam (DRE)

  • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test

These tools help catch prostate cancer before it spreads. Thanks to early detection, the five-year survival rate is 97.5%.

According to the National Cancer Institute’s SEER Program, in 2024, an estimated 299,010 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Approximately 35,250 men are expected to die from the disease.

Risk factors include:

  • Age (more common in older men)

  • Family history of prostate cancer

  • African-American ancestry
