World Inflammatory Bowel Disease Day
World Inflammatory Bowel Disease Day – May 19
Every year on May 19, we recognize World Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Day. This global initiative raises awareness of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis—chronic, often invisible conditions that affect millions worldwide.
IBD is more than a digestive issue. It’s a lifelong illness marked by ongoing inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms may include severe abdominal pain, fatigue, weight loss, and urgent bowel movements. They can flare up unpredictably, making life physically and emotionally exhausting.
World IBD Day is about more than awareness. It’s about support, compassion, and driving research toward better treatments—and one day, a cure.
Wear Purple to Support the IBD Community
Purple is the official color for IBD awareness. It symbolizes strength, unity, and hope. On May 19, patients, caregivers, and advocates worldwide wear purple ribbons, wristbands, and pins to stand in solidarity.
At Personalized Cause®, we proudly offer a range of purple awareness products for World IBD Day:
Purple enamel pins – Personalize with a name, date, or phrase.
Purple fabric ribbons – Perfect for events, support groups, or fundraising.
Purple silicone wristbands – Choose our signature KNOW MORE® design or create a custom batch.
These aren’t just accessories. They’re conversation starters. They break the silence around invisible illnesses and show those affected that they are seen and supported.
Join the Movement – May 19
World IBD Day is your chance to wear purple, start conversations, and spread understanding. Together, we can raise awareness, fight stigma, and push for better care and lasting solutions.
Your purple ribbon may be small—but its message is powerful: I see you. I support you. I stand with you.

What Is Inflammatory Bowel Disease?
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic conditions that cause inflammation in the digestive tract. The two most common types are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Chronic inflammation can damage the digestive system—even when symptoms seem mild or come and go. Early treatment is critical. It prevents long-term complications that affect not only the digestive tract but also the entire body.
When inflammation disrupts digestion, it can trigger serious problems—from constipation to malnutrition. In rare cases, untreated IBD can be life-threatening.
Symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease
IBD symptoms vary depending on where the inflammation occurs:
Diarrhea – Often severe. The intestines can’t reabsorb water, leading to dehydration, fainting, kidney issues, or headaches.
Abdominal pain – From mild cramps to severe bloating or pain, sometimes linked to blockages.
Weight loss – Caused by diarrhea or poor nutrient absorption, leading to deficiencies like anemia.
Hematochezia – Blood in the stool from ulcers or intestinal inflammation.
Other issues – Inflammation can also affect the eyes, joints, and skin.
Crohn’s Disease
Crohn’s can affect any part of the digestive tract, from mouth to anus. Inflammation often appears in patches and varies in severity.
It’s a chronic, progressive disease with flare-ups and remissions. Symptoms differ widely, so patients must learn what’s “normal” for them and when to seek care.
Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis (UC) affects only the colon and rectum. It causes continuous inflammation of the inner lining, often with ulcers.
Unlike Crohn’s, UC is not patchy—the inflammation is continuous. It is often diagnosed between ages 25–30 and affects about 700,000 people in the U.S.
Like Crohn’s, UC can progress over time, with symptoms ranging from mild cramps to severe bleeding and pain.
What Causes IBD?
The exact cause is unknown. Researchers believe it involves:
Immune system malfunctions
Genetic predisposition
Environmental triggers
No single factor explains IBD. Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation through medication. In severe cases, surgery may be needed.
Quality of Life and Early Detection of Inflammatory Bowel Disease
IBD can take a heavy toll on daily life. But early diagnosis and treatment help many people live fulfilling lives.
The key is early intervention. Controlling inflammation early prevents lasting damage and improves long-term outcomes.
If you suspect IBD, see your doctor promptly.
