Understanding Arthritis: More Than Joint Pain

Arthritis is one of the most common health issues today. Yet many don’t realize how diverse it is. There are over 100 types of arthritis, each with unique symptoms and effects.

Most people think of joint pain and stiffness. In reality, arthritis can also cause swelling, fatigue, and organ complications.

This May, take the time to learn more. Awareness leads to early diagnosis, stronger support, and better quality of life for those living with arthritis.

Understanding Arthritis During Arthritis Awareness Month

Arthritis is not just one disease. It’s a broad term for over 100 conditions. These conditions fall into three main categories: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis. Let’s look at what sets them apart.

Osteoarthritis: The Wear-and-Tear Arthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form. It comes from aging and the natural wear and tear of joints. OA usually affects the hands, feet, spine, hips, and knees. Cartilage in these joints breaks down over time, reducing shock absorption and causing pain and stiffness.

Obesity is a major risk factor. Extra weight places pressure on joints and speeds up cartilage damage, even in younger people.

Managing Osteoarthritis

Treatment often starts with NSAIDs, over-the-counter pain relievers, and joint supplements. Self-care—like weight loss, regular exercise, and ice therapy—plays a key role. Surgery, including hip and knee replacements, may restore mobility when other options fail.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: An Autoimmune Battle

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease. The immune system attacks healthy tissue, causing inflammation in the joints. Symptoms include pain, swelling, stiffness, and potential joint damage. RA can affect anyone, at any age.

Morning stiffness is a hallmark. Joints may feel warm, look red, and often show symmetry—both knees, for example. Rheumatoid nodules, firm bumps near joints, are another sign. RA may also harm organs like the lungs, eyes, and heart.

Psoriatic Arthritis: When Skin and Joints Connect

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) links joint inflammation with psoriasis, a chronic skin condition. About one-third of people with psoriasis develop PsA. Sometimes, joint pain comes before the skin changes. PsA can be tricky to diagnose, since it mimics RA or gout.

Family history plays a role, and PsA usually develops between ages 30 and 50.

Treatments for RA and PsA

Since both are autoimmune, treatments aim to calm the immune system. NSAIDs and steroids help with flare-ups. More advanced therapies include DMARDs and biologics, which target the immune response directly. Some patients also use supplements like turmeric alongside medical care.
