Red Ribbon Week

Personalized Cause awareness calendar red ribbon week blog

It’s Red Ribbon Week!

Red Ribbon Week takes place each October. Honor Enrique “Kiki” Camarena and support this national campaign by wearing a red awareness product. Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Agent, was murdered in Mexico for his fight against drugs. His murder inspired the first Nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign. Sponsored by the National Family Partnership, the campaign raises awareness about drug use and abuse. Show your support with red awareness pins, wristbands, or fabric ribbons. These spark conversation and promote a drug-free future.

About DEA Agent Enrique Camarena

Since its beginning in 1985, the red awareness pin has touched millions of lives worldwide. The symbol was created in response to the tragic murder of DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. He gave his life to fight drug use and trafficking. Outraged parents and youth across America began wearing them. This was a visible sign of their commitment to raising awareness about the destruction caused by drugs.

Today, it continues to serve as a powerful emblem of prevention, remembrance, and advocacy. Honor Agent Camarena’s legacy and show your support during Red Ribbon Week. Wear a red awareness ribbon, pin, or wristband. Each product carries the message of courage, sacrifice, and the ongoing fight for a drug-free future.

The Battle Against Drugs

In honor of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena’s memory and his fight against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors began wearing red satin ribbons. Parents, tired of seeing the destruction caused by alcohol and drugs, formed coalitions. The inspiration was  because of Camarena’s belief that one person can make a difference. They adopted the red awareness ribbon as a symbol of his legacy.

By 1988, the National Family Partnership launched the first official National Red Ribbon Celebration. This has since grown into a movement reaching millions of families across the United States. This remains a powerful catalyst, mobilizing communities to educate youth, raise awareness, and promote drug prevention.

Schools nationwide also participate through the D.A.R.E. program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). This program equips millions of children around the world with the knowledge and skills to resist drugs, gangs, and violence.

Show your commitment during Red Ribbon Week by wearing awareness pins, fabric ribbons, or wristbands—small but powerful reminders of the ongoing fight for a drug-free future.

About D.A.R.E.

Support D.A.R.E. by taking a stand against drug use. Educate yourself about the dangers of illegal drugs. In addition, learn how to raise awareness in your community. This vital program empowers kids to “just say no.” It also equips them with the tools to resist peer pressure, avoid risky behaviors, and protect their futures.

Drug addiction is a difficult cycle to break. It often derails education and leads to lifelong struggles. Through the D.A.R.E. Campaign, children gain the confidence and knowledge they need to stay drug-free. Together, we can empower the next generation to live healthy, drug-free lives.

Personalized Cause® and D.A.R.E.

The awareness color for D.A.R.E. is red. Show your support by wearing a red enamel awareness pin, fabric ribbon, or silicone wristband to honor the campaign and promote drug-free living.
