Jaden Smith and Young Thug challenged gender norms simply by choosing what they wore. These actions matter. They help normalize what should already be accepted. Culture is slowly shifting, but change takes time. Pride Month encourages us to keep moving forward, even when progress feels slow.
Pride Month – Honoring the Stonewall Riots
We celebrate Pride Month in June to honor the Stonewall Riots. These events happened in 1969. The LGBTQ+ community fought back after a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. The Stonewall Inn served people who were most excluded—drag queens, trans people, homeless LGBTQ+ youth, and others. The police often raided gay bars. But that night, the community had enough. They resisted.
The protest grew. People threw bricks and rocks. The crowd grew larger and more defiant. What started as one night turned into days of rioting. These riots sparked a movement. Just one year later, cities across the country held the first Pride parades. Pride Month was born from that resistance. The message of Pride Month is simple—be visible, be proud, and never give up.
The LGBTQ+ Community Took a Stand
After the riots, LGBTQ+ people began organizing. They formed support groups. They started fighting for equal rights and protections. These groups gave the community a stronger voice. Pride Month became a yearly celebration of their courage. It also became a reminder that the fight continues. The goal of Pride Month is not just to celebrate—it’s also to demand change.
LGBTQ+ groups also began forming in other countries. Canada, Australia, and many parts of Europe followed the U.S. lead. The Stonewall Riots showed people everywhere that change was possible. Pride Month brings people together around the world to fight for justice and equality.
LGBTQ+ Youth Today
So where do we stand now? What does life look like for LGBTQ+ youth in 2025? According to the Human Rights Campaign, many still face rejection. Four out of ten LGBTQ+ teens say their community does not accept them. That means almost half live in fear of being themselves. Pride Month gives these young people hope and connection. It reminds them they are not alone.
Another report shows the emotional toll rejection takes. About 26 percent of LGBTQ+ teens say their biggest issue is not being accepted by family. In comparison, just 22 percent of non-LGBTQ+ teens say school is their biggest stress. Pride Month raises awareness of these differences. It encourages support from families, schools, and communities.
Progress Is Happening, But It’s Not Enough
One troubling fact is that nearly 70 percent of LGBTQ+ teens still hear anti-LGBTQ+ remarks from politicians. Pride Month is a chance to push back against that negativity. It’s a time to support laws and leaders that promote equality. Real change must happen at every level—at home, in schools, and in government.
There is good news, too. About 75 percent of LGBTQ+ teens say their peers support them. That’s a huge shift from past generations. Pride Month celebrates this progress. It also motivates us to do better for the 25 percent still facing judgment. Kids today are leading the way. Their open minds are shaping a better future.
